CHXMERAS are an electronic duo based in Vancouver, Canada. Haunted by the ghosts of technological alienation and fractured identities, their debut album, Terminal City, is a crepuscular soundtrack to lost futures and a reckoning with our fragmented present. It charts an immersive, sonic passage through the ruins of late stage capitalism, environmental degradation, and urban decay. Weaving obscure film samples and field recordings with abstract influences from electronic music and cinema, CHXMERAS infuse dub, techno, ambient, and hip-hop sounds with kinetic movement, fractal noise, and polyrhythmic modular synthesis.
Terminal City is a dark, urgent, and driving record full of live performance energy that was written, recorded, and self-produced at their home studio in Vancouver, out of extended improvisations using modular synths, drum loops, keyboards, samplers and pedal effects.
The duo recorded more than fifty hours of music over an intensive period during the summer and fall of 2022, and spent the next several months meticulously distilling their initial ideas into the seeds of new compositions. They resampled sounds and elements from the early live recordings, re-arranged and added layers of sound processing, then incorporated pedals effects, film samples, and field recordings to create the album’s twelve tracks. “This record feels haunted”, the duo says. “It’s like a lost soundtrack that we uncovered. As we were recording it, we started to hear all of these echoes in the songs...of the landscapes we grew up around, in the UK and in Vancouver, of the hip-hop and electronic music that’s inspired us over the years, and of the personal losses and transformations in our own lives. So the album ended up being a soundtrack to all those feelings and our attempt to capture their echoes and sculpt them into songs.”
Each track on the album invokes ghosted landscapes and aural frequencies drawn equally from industrial and natural environments. Undercurrents of loss and the opioid crisis run through album opener “GORE AVE”, the swirling “W.P.S.” conjures dark visions of industrial chemical plants and land laid to waste, while the rolling rhythms of “Memoria” and the dissociative “Skimmer” open into 808 drops that thrum the dancefloor. Elsewhere, the gravitational force of dubby “Subterrain” and the lo-fi FM crackle and snare snap of “Radio Halo” give way to the disorienting, multi-temporal pulse of “Terraform”, the devastating low-end drop of “Javelin”, and the ambient swirl of “Afterlife”. Terminal City is about at once both familiar and eerie—a present and prescient portrait of an increasingly mirrored world.
CHXMERAS offer a singular sonic vision of life spiralling into itself, turning and transforming, along fractal paths.
